Wise Kids® Outdoors
How can we inspire kids to spend more time enjoying the outdoors? How do we reach kids in their everyday play environments to share the importance of being healthy and active?
“Wise Kids® Outdoors,” a new wellness program by the Säjai® Foundation and the National Recreation and Park Association, is tackling these challenges.
An after-school and summer camp program, Wise Kids Outdoors takes kids on supervised outdoor adventures to learn about animals, the weather, the earth and more. Each adventure mission connects nature to health, so that kids learn the importance of a balanced life that includes being active outdoors and eating well. This program is packaged for service agencies, clubs and camps that enroll children outside of school.
In 2008, Wise Kids Outdoors debuted with pilot projects in Minnesota, California, Virginia and Ohio. Projects were evaluated by the University of Minnesota for impact on children’s behavior and attitudes toward the outdoors, healthy eating and activity. This effort builds off the existing success of the Säjai Foundation’s Wise Kids, a parent program that focuses on nutrition and activity.
Across the country, parks, green spaces and forests await rediscovery by kids, who are naturally curious and make daily decisions about what to do and how to eat. Let’s empower these outdoor adventurers to be Wise Kids Outdoors. Together, we can change families and communities for the better – forever.
