Teaching Kids About The Environment
To excite kids about science and nature, there’s no better classroom than the great outdoors. In South Carolina, some 3rd, 4th and 5th graders already know that — because they’re getting hands-on lessons in water ecology, wildlife resources, forestry and soil science.
These young scientists participate in a program called “Teaching Kids About the Environment” (KATE), hosted by Clemson University’s Youth Learning Institute and Pinnacle Partners, organizations dedicated to initiatives that give children the chance to enjoy the benefits of being outdoors.
During a 3-day, residential KATE adventure, students experience more core outdoor education than they do in 3 weeks of traditional classroom instruction--including nature hikes, collecting expeditions, group challenges and games. Endorsed by the South Carolina Department of Education, this innovative program has, over the past 17 years, reached more than 65,000 students.
Now, KATE has a unique opportunity to expand. Pinnacle Partners has provided forestland in South Carolina’s Upstate region for a new KATE residential site with capacity to teach an additional 7,000 students each year.
To succeed, these partners need a total budget of $983,472, of which 85% will go directly toward student scholarships to attend KATE. Please help us meet this goal – and make a lasting difference in kids’ lives.
