Pittsburgh Outdoor Promise

For City Charter High School students in Pittsburgh, some of the most memorable lessons happen outdoors—paddling a kayak, for instance, or biking a trail. College interns known as “Compass Coordinators” organize these outings, which support the school’s physical education and science requirements.

Now, Sustainable Pittsburgh, a decade-old non-profit, hopes to expand this model program through a new pilot program called “Pittsburgh Outdoor Promise” (POP). Across southwestern Pennsylvania, particularly in Allegheny County, the program seeks to bring Compass Coordinators into more schools and into agencies that serve kids after and outside of school.

To help these kids make nature a habit outside school, POP also plans to introduce the “POP Pass,” a gift card that can be redeemed for recreational activities with participating providers. Bringing their experiences back indoors, young people will be able to track wellness goals online, via Sustainable Pittsburgh’s expanding “Walls are Bad” website, which celebrates outdoor lifestyles.

With financial support, Sustainable Pittsburgh can work with more schools and agencies, enlist corporate supporters to provide recreation opportunities and develop materials for kids. This is the Pittsburgh Outdoor Promise!
