Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors
Without an adult to introduce them to the great outdoors -- a grandfather who fishes, for instance, or a parent who gardens in the backyard – kids sometimes grow up never having personally connected with nature. Later, when they look back, they may have few childhood memories of time spent outdoors – and little feeling for the landscape around them.
A program called Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors is working to change that.
Launched a decade ago in Kansas, Pass It On matches children from disadvantaged backgrounds to adult mentors who introduce them to outdoor activity, sharing experiences and a love of nature. The program works by partnering with existing youth mentoring organizations, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, and outdoor organizations, such as Pheasants Forever, Audubon Society, Sierra Club, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and others, to provide outdoor mentors to disadvantaged kids.
Across a dozen Midwestern states, Pass It On already has reached more than 5,000 children, from ages 5 to 15. The program is poised to grow, with children in South Dakota and Iowa now waiting for outdoor mentors. Your support can give these kids memories to last a lifetime. Pass it on.
