Outdoor Spaces For Children: Exposure West Atlanta

In West Atlanta, children live and attend school surrounded by a natural landscape that they rarely have the chance to stop and enjoy.

To change that, the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance and its partners hope to launch a new project – “Outdoor Spaces for Children: Exposure West Atlanta” – that connects underserved children to nature with outdoor programs and then gives them a voice to share those experiences, through stories, photos and videos.

Already, the Alliance has conserved more than 400 acres of wild lands, including a 26-acre forest in the heart of a historically African American neighborhood. Now, it seeks to partner with area universities and other outdoor activity providers, combining media arts programming with outdoor activity in monthly outings for children.

Ultimately, Alliance leaders hope to link 20 partner organizations and schools in this effort, dramatically increasing the number of children reached overall and the amount of outdoor activity that every child experiences.

With this broad and consistent effort, a vulnerable group of Atlanta children would gain confidence, media arts skills, and ultimately, a stronger sense of community and the outdoors. These are gifts that last a lifetime. Help us provide them.
