Nuestra Naturaleza, Nuestra Communidad
As the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population, Latinos are assuming a bigger and more influential role in the conservation movement. One project, which will build on the work that the National Audubon Society and its partners are doing in urban areas, seeks to provide more support and funding to Latino communities across the country and to empower Latino and other youth to enjoy – and protect – their landscape.
Audubon will build on its 100-year history of connecting people to nature to use outdoor experiences to help Latino kids find their voice in the conservation movement—and in their communities. “Nuestra Naturaleza, Nuestra Communidad” will leverage existing programs and established relationships with Latino community groups and leaders at in the urban communities where Audubon has established community nature centers.
The initiative will explore a number of avenues for engaging Latino audiences, from preschool and elementary to high school and college. By working together, Audubon and its partners will share best practices for training, marketing, and outreach, including an online “Idea Kit.” The first step in this project is finding support to conduct the initial needs assessment and research phase, which will provide the foundation for moving forward.
Connecting Latino kids with their natural legacy has a compelling goal: “trayendo la naturaleza a todos los Americanos” – to bring nature home to all Americans.
